Nadia and Carol

Nadia Comaneci (Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej, now Onesti) Romanian Gymnast born November 12, 1961. She was the first Romanian to receive a score of 10 during an Olympic contest. Comaneci was discovered by Bela Karolyi, later to be the Romanian gymnastics coach when she was only six years old. Comaneci was the first to compete for time in the 1969 National junior championships. She finished 13th. The following year she was crowned champion. When she competed in her first international contest in 1972 a pre-Olympic junior meet for the communist-bloc countries she was awarded three gold medals while in 1973 and 1974 she won the all-around junior championship. She defeated the Russian Lyudmila Torishcheva who was the five-time European Champion at her first senior international event in 1975. At this competition, she took home four golds as well as a silver. In 1976, she became the first female performer to make a reverse double salo on the uneven parallel bar as part of her demount. Carol Marie Wayne is a American citizen who was born on September 6 1942 in Chicago, Illinois. Carol began her career in the entertainment business when she was a teenager. In her early years she was a figure skater on the show Ice Capades with her sister Nina Wayne. They featured ice-skating shows that included theatrical performances.
